Lutheran Church and Ministry in Northbrook, Illinois

Children singing - lutheran church in Northbrook, IL
We are known for our worship style which has a strong music and singing component thanks to the many musical talents of our Music Director and Organist, Jonathan Kohrs. Jonathan is a Composer himself of Christian Music and a Lead Faculty member at Concordia University Chicago in River Forest, IL. In addition, our worship service offers multiple liturgical settings throughout the Church year. We celebrate the Eucharist/Holy Communion every weekend service.

We serve the families of our community by providing excellence in Christian Education through our weekday ministry, Seeds of Grace Christian Child Development Center, and our Sunday School and Confirmation programs.

Sunday Adult Education/Adult Forum

The adult forum meets most Sunday mornings after worship from September through the end of May beginning at 10:45 am to discuss topics relevant to the Christian faith. Islam and Christianity, immigration and the church, faith formation in children and families, and the fine arts in faith and worship have been some recent topics. The format may be lecture or discussion, depending upon the topic and the leader.

The 2017-2018 schedule, currently being finalized, will highlight the 500 th anniversary of Martin Luther’s Ninety Five Theses; the “cheap grace” concerns voiced by Dietrich Bonhoeffer in Nazi Germany; questions of religious liberty in history and contemporary America; faith formation in the home; and marriage. Weekend seminars will be offered periodically on family life themes. A five part series in the fall on the Augsburg Confession will survey the basic statement of the 16 th century Lutheran Reformation.

Guest speakers are invited for special topics. The forum meets in the Fellowship Room.

Sunday School

A coordinated curriculum for children ages 4 years to 5th grade with an emphasis on learning the Bible. Sunday School is every Sunday, unless there is a holiday from the beginning of September through the end of May.

Vacation Bible School

Join us the last week of July for fun-filled week from 9am until noon. All ages welcome for programs and volunteering opportunities.

Wednesday Bible Study and Mutual Support Group

This small group meets at 10:30 am (ADD the following) on most Wednesday mornings from the beginning of September through the end of May. The focus is on introductory level Bible study, but issue oriented sessions are also on the schedule. In the past year the group studied the first epistle of Peter; completed one half of a brief survey of the Old Testament; took up the theme of sacrifice in the Bible; and completed a six-part study of racism and the church. Part of the morning session is devoted to prayer, especially for friends and family with special needs.

In the coming year the group will complete its survey of Old Testament themes, do an overview of the minor prophets, and address coping with grief, among other things. Occasionally it joins the children of Seeds of Grace in their weekly devotions in the church sanctuary—just to keep young at heart!

The format combines lecture and lively conversation. Classes are held in the Fellowship Room. If you know virtually nothing about the Bible, you will not feel out of place in our wide ranging discussions.
